Brief History

The American Institute of Architects or AIA is a non-governmental organization of professional architects based in the United Sates. Founded in New York City in 1857 by 13 architects, the organization’s main purpose at its inception was to promote the value of architecture profession, and sharpen the scientific and practical skills of architects in the United States.

The AIA headquarters is located in Washington, D.C., and as of 2017, the institution is headed by Robert Ivy, who is its Chief Executive Officer, and Thomas V. Vonier, the organization’s president.

AIA Services

Using its large membership power, AIA influences the federal government’s decisions and policies regarding the architecture profession to a greater extent. Working in tandem with the law makers, the organization has initiated community-based programs to enhance protection of the infrastructure, boost the public space design, and design houses that are easily affordable across all the social classes in the United Sates.

Membership of AIA

The AIA boasts 90,000 plus members, including licensed architects and associated professionals. The membership is divided into five levels including depending on the requirements.

• Associate members. These are members without licenses to practice architecture in the United States, but work under the guidance and supervision of full professional architects.
• Emeritus members. This group is made up of 65-and-above-year old architects who lack the energy needed to thrive in architecture profession, and whose membership had lasted for at least 15 successive years.
• Architect members. This group consists of those who have the license to practice architecture in the United States.
• Allied members. Consists of professionals such as engineers and planners whose fields of specialization relate to building and design community.
International associate members. It is made up of professionals with either an architecture license or its equivalent, typically awarded by other licensing bodies in other countries other than the United States.

AIA Leadership Structure

The AIA has the Board of Directors, which is responsible for the governance of the organization. The institution has 300 components across the United States, both at local and state levels. The components ensure that AIA members at both levels focus on their professions. Other than the United States, these components are found across other various nations such as Japan, UK, and Hong Kong. Additionally, the organization has at least 200 employees working on a full-time basis to ensure proper service delivery across the nation.
